Examining the 2025 RRHOF nomination picks.
Ahhhhh it's another year in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame saga regardless of how controversial it seems to pretty much everyone. I figured at least it's a bit of distraction all because of everything's been going on since this year started (not going to get to that though).
For 40 years the foundation honor groups & individuals for what they did to change the entire course of rock & roll no matter how much mainstream they had nor what genres they do. After all, the whole concept of R&R is to recognize spirit, attitude, diversity, evolution & pop culture as it always been the case since the dawn of the 50's. Take a look at the first two classes.
Finally, there's more to RRHOF (precisely the term R&R itself) than just sales, charts, tickets & tours as it only indicates being popular with fans & audiences, it never matters to the industry. What matters is the sheer level of influence, innovation, impact & originality certain artists had on the music landscape & the business. The more people know, the more it understands to them.
So today the committee dropped the list of 2025 nominees & we'll go over on who will be locks for induction, those with half/half chances & others not making a final cut without a ticket. I'll also do observations too.
100% guarantee for inclusion:
Mariah Carey - Unsurprisingly, Carey was left out when the Hall announced their inductions last year despite people saying she'll get her due. Maybe this time wouldn't be a repeat of what happened.
Billy Idol - Just like with Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow & Lionel Richie, an appearance at the ceremony would make a way for FYN nomination
Cyndi Lauper - What happened with Pat Benatar might actually work for Cyndi. Really don't think the voters will pass her again given the competition two years ago.
Oasis - Honestly, I thought this band would be left out following last year, it was definitely a case until late previous August when they announced their reunion comeback. It's gonna be a lock this time.
OutKast: A lone hip hop act on the ballot, their chances are very high. Even more helpful is the Big Boi's appearance at the 2023 show & Andre 3000 released a new album around the same time.
Soundgarden - A third time's a charm may work for these Seattle grunge icons. I can't see them going through the "RATM" method.
50/50:
Bad Company - It would be like Foreigner last year, they might become FYN inductees, then again I wouldn't put them on a high chance just yet.
Joy Division/New Order - Always I expect these stalwarts of post punk - new wave to return on the ballot, although I'm not optimistic about their subsequent honor. They might be another "Devo" candidate, yet I'm certain they'll be voted in finally.
Phish - I figured since Dave Matthews Band got their moment last year, very possible that their contemporaries Phish would be next. First timers, yet I'll be like with DMB five years ago although it can be different.
The White Stripes - Very insane The White Stripes are nominated again alongside Soundgarden & Oasis, yet unlike the two, the duo might not be on the final list of those getting voted in. At least it would be very cool when they may actually got their alongside them.
Not a chance even without a ticket
The Black Crowes - Never thought I see this 90's band on the ballot let alone honored yet here we are. I'm not against them or anything, heck I dig some tunes. It's just they don't have what it takes to become a legitimate RRHOF inductee.
Chubby Checker - Don't get me wrong, the man is a performer who changed rock & roll yet it might be too late to him getting voted in.
Joe Cocker - Yeah, he performed at Woodstock, yet he's known for covering songs by other artists including modern music pioneers The Beatles. Cocker might not have another nomination, instead he would eventually be a side pick.
Mana - Ngl, this reminds of the situation with Fela Kuti four years ago. Despite their impact, it's very likely Mana would be a sure thing not to get inducted as we know the voters are US centric. It's still very pleasing that the committee thinks outside of the box.
In addition, I'll also give out my predictions for other categories.
Musical Excellence:
Devo
New York Dolls
Iron Maiden
Musical Influence:
John Coltrane
Patsy Cline
Dick Dale
Ahmet Ertugun Award:
Ed Sullivan
Tom Wilson
This will be another free-for-all. Looking forward to what happens in April.
